Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS A MALA?
Malas are traditional meditation necklaces. They have 108 stones that form a circle. A separate stone, called the Guru bead is attached just outside the circle and is usually larger. Malas are completed with a tassel or a stone or crystal.
There are knots in between each stone to represent a pause, a breath in between thoughts. When malas are used in meditation, for repeating mantras or counting breaths, the knots allow a person to go easily from one stone to the next even with closed eyes.
Malas are not new. They've been around for centuries in India and other parts of the world. Some say they're the precursor to the rosary. Today, malas are used in meditation, to help one focus on an affirmation or mantra, or are worn as a reminder of one's intention and purpose.
WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF 108 STONES?
There are many reasons why 108 is significant. For instance, it is said that there are 108 lines of energy that lead to the heart chakra. There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet - each having a masculine and a feminine - therefore 108. In meditation, it is said that enlightenment may come if one can slow their breathing and take a total of 108 breaths per day. The number 108 also has special significance in astrology and in Hinduism, Buddhism and other religions.
HOW DO I PICK A MALA?
I've often heard it said that the mala picks you. Does that sound a bit too weird for you? I thought so too at first but it's been the case so many times that I am now a believer. Stones have very specific vibrations and properties. I've found that most people will naturally be drawn to a mala that reflects that which is needed in their lives.
HOW LONG ARE MALAS?
Malas come in two sizes of beads - 6mm and 8mm.
The 6mm malas are generally 18" in length plus the tassel or finishing decoration.
The 8mm malas are generally 22" in length, plus the tassel or finishing decoration.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SIZE OF BRACELETS FOR WOMEN AND MEN?
The average size of a woman's bracelets is usually around 7" in circumference. Men's bracelets are usually 7.5". The easiest way to measure for a bracelet is to wrap a string around your wrist and then to measure the length of string. If you have any questions about sizing, I am happy to help.
CAN I INFUSE MY STONES WITH ESSENTIAL OILS?
Lava Rock is porous and will hold the smell of essential oils better than polished stone. If you love essential oils, consider selecting a piece with Lava Rock or have some added to an existing design. I have the traditional black ones as well as other colours.

WHAT IS LIVE YOUR BALANCE?
Live Your Balance is the name of my Coaching and Yoga business. After connecting with my jewelry clients over the years and feeling like I was making a small difference in their journey, I decided that I wanted to have a bigger impact in my community. I became a yoga teacher so I could share just how much yoga has helped me through tough times. After some more soul searching, I felt compelled to use my challenging experience as a caregiver for my husband following a serious car accident to be of service to others in similar situations. I became a Coach. My vision is to normalize self-care and compassion so that we may all live and expect a balanced life. I hope you'll check out my site.
